The main Discord image sizes are: server banner at least 960x540 (16:9), server invite background 1920x1080, server icon at least 128x128, profile banner at least 680x240, stickers exactly 320x320, and role icons 64x64. Emojis have no fixed pixel size but must be under 256KB. Every number below comes from Discord's own help center as of October 2026, along with which Boost level or Nitro plan each image needs.

Server icon

Discord's server creation guide sets the minimum at 128x128. If you are cropping from a larger image, it suggests sizes in multiples of 128, such as 256 or 512. Icons display small, so keep the important part in the center and avoid fine text.

An animated server icon (a GIF) is a Boost Level 1 perk, which takes 2 boosts.

Server banner

The server banner is the image at the top of your channel list.

  • Size: at least 960x540 at a 16:9 ratio, which is also the size Discord recommends. A 1920x1080 image is fine too: Discord resizes it on upload.
  • Keep the top 48 pixels simple. Your server name sits over that strip, so busy detail there makes the name hard to read.
  • Avoid logos and text in the image. Discord recommends key art, a character still, or a subtle background instead.
  • Static banners need Boost Level 2 (7 boosts). Animated banners need Level 3 (14 boosts). Partnered servers get the banner without boosting.
  • An animated banner plays for 5 seconds when the server loads, pauses, and plays again on hover or when it scrolls back into view. It does not animate for anyone with reduced motion turned on.

Server owners and members with Manage Server or Administrator can change it under Server Settings, Overview, near the bottom of the page. If the server drops from Level 3 to Level 2, an animated banner automatically becomes static.

Server invite background (invite splash)

This is the image behind the invite pop-up when someone opens your server's invite link in the app or a browser.

  • Size: it must be exactly 1920x1080.
  • Format: JPG or PNG. It cannot be a GIF or animated.
  • Layout: the invite card sits as an upright rectangle in the middle, so keep the interesting parts of the image toward the edges.
  • Needs Boost Level 1 (2 boosts), and stays available at Levels 2 and 3.

Upload it under Server Settings, Overview, Server Invite Background. You cannot crop or adjust it after uploading, so size it correctly first. To preview it, open your invite link in a private browser window.

Profile avatar

Avatars can be PNG or GIF, but only Nitro subscribers can use an animated GIF. Discord's help page does not set a pixel size for avatars. Because the avatar is shown as a circle, use a square image with the subject centered, and check the crop preview before you apply it.

Profile banner

The banner at the top of your profile card is a Nitro feature. Discord's rules: PNG, JPG or animated GIF, under 10MB, at least 680x240 pixels. After uploading you get a crop step, so a wider image gives you room to frame it.

Custom emoji

  • File size: under 256KB.
  • Formats: JPEG, PNG, GIF or WEBP.
  • Names: at least 2 characters, letters, numbers and underscores only.
  • Pixel size: Discord does not set one. Emojis are displayed small, so a square image of around 128x128 is plenty, and a transparent PNG background usually looks cleanest.

Every server starts with 50 emoji slots. Boosting adds more: 100 at Level 1, 150 at Level 2 and 250 at Level 3. For how slots and animated emojis work in practice, see our guide to adding custom emojis and stickers.

Stickers

Stickers have the strictest rules of anything on this list:

  • Dimensions: exactly 320x320 pixels.
  • Formats: PNG for static stickers, APNG for animated ones.
  • File size: 512KB maximum.

Discord renders stickers at 160x160 in desktop chat, which is why it asks for 320x320: the extra resolution keeps them sharp on high-density screens. Servers get 5 sticker slots by default, 15 at Level 1, 30 at Level 2 and 60 at Level 3. You can upload stickers from the desktop or web app only, and you cannot swap the file of a sticker after uploading, only delete it and upload a new one.

Role icons

Role icons appear next to members' names in chat and in the member list.

  • Size: 64x64 pixels.
  • File size: 256KB maximum.
  • Static only. You can use an uploaded image, a standard emoji, or a static custom emoji from your server, but not an animated one.
  • Needs Boost Level 2. If the server drops below Level 2, the icons stay uploaded but stop showing until the level returns.

You need the Manage Roles permission, and icons can only be set from the desktop app. If a member has several roles with icons, Discord shows the icon of their highest role.

File upload limits

These limits apply to images and files you attach to messages, not to the server images above.

Frequently asked questions

What size is a Discord server banner?

At least 960x540 pixels at a 16:9 ratio, which is Discord's recommended size. A 1920x1080 upload also works and is resized automatically. Keep the top 48 pixels uncluttered so the server name stays readable.

What size is a Discord profile banner?

At least 680x240 pixels, as a PNG, JPG or animated GIF under 10MB. Profile banners need Nitro.

What size should a Discord emoji be?

Discord only sets a file size limit of 256KB. A square image around 128x128 with a transparent background works well, since emojis display small.

Why does my Discord sticker upload fail?

The usual reasons are the wrong dimensions (it must be exactly 320x320), the wrong format (only PNG or APNG), or a file over 512KB.

What is the Discord invite splash size?

The server invite background, sometimes called the invite splash, must be 1920x1080 and a JPG or PNG. It needs Boost Level 1.
